Gallaudet University is a school for deaf and hard of hearing students, and is home to the Bisons—a college football team competing in the NCAA. Unlike their hearing opponents, Gallaudet’s athletes face unique communication challenges on the field, where clear and timely coordination is crucial for success. This disparity highlighted an important question: how can technology and design help level the playing field?
With this challenge in mind, we set out to explore innovative solutions. Leveraging AT&T’s zero-latency 5G network, our goal was to develop a next-generation helmet that could enhance real-time communication between coaches and players. By addressing this critical need, we aimed to empower Gallaudet’s athletes and coaches to compete on equal terms with their hearing counterparts.
Central to our development process was a human-centered design approach. We began by immersing ourselves in the unique communication challenges faced by Gallaudet’s athletes, gaining firsthand insight into their needs on the field. Simultaneously, we explored the design and architecture of the existing Riddell SpeedFlex helmet to identify opportunities for innovation and enhancement that could address these challenges.
Through extensive interactive sessions, we developed an iterative design process that guided prototype development. Each round of user feedback was carefully analyzed and directly informed the next iteration, driving continuous improvement. This cycle of presentation, feedback, and refinement was instrumental in shaping a helmet that was purpose-built to empower its users and enhance on-field communication and performance.
Creating the AT&T 5G Helmet was a complex technical challenge, requiring the integration of a battery, transmitter, visual display, and cabling into a SpeedFlex helmet. This had to be done without compromising safety for high-impact sports whilst retaining full functionality. Collaborating closely with Riddell, we embarked on a journey of innovation, exploring ways to seamlessly incorporate these components while maintaining the helmet’s structural integrity.
Our efforts combined off-the-shelf and custom-built technologies to achieve the desired outcome. The helmet features a LetinAR prismatic display made from polymer composite, along with other precision-engineered components, striking a perfect balance between safety and performance. Rigorous testing against NCAA’s stringent safety standards ensured its readiness to withstand the demanding conditions of college football.
After two years of dedicated product development, iterative design, rigorous safety testing, and innovative prototyping, the AT&T 5G Helmet and its custom app were finalized. This marked more than a technological breakthrough—it was a bold step toward reshaping the future of sports.
With its debut, the helmet set out to redefine not only how the game is played but also who can participate, championing a new era of inclusivity and innovation in American football.
On October 7th, 2023, college football witnessed history as Gallaudet University debuted this groundbreaking helmet in a competitive game. Approved for trial use by the NCAA—the first augmented helmet ever sanctioned by the sport’s governing body—quarterback Brandon Washington wore it while scoring the game-winning touchdown. The moment attracted nationwide media attention, with coverage from ESPN, Fox Sports, Good Morning America, and CNN.
The journey of the AT&T 5G Helmet, from initial concept to game-day debut, showcases the transformative power of innovation in sports. By seamlessly integrating advanced technology with the demands of high-impact play, it has set a new benchmark for what’s possible on the field. Its successful deployment is a testament to the dedication and vision that made this groundbreaking achievement a reality, and we’re proud to have played our part in advancing the sport through technology.
Looking ahead, the potential for this technology extends far beyond its current application. From enhancing player performance to improving safety and accessibility, the AT&T 5G Helmet paves the way for a future where innovation continues to redefine the game at every level. As we explore new possibilities, this is just the beginning of what’s possible when technology and sports come together to push boundaries.
